About the Role:
The Underwriter plays a crucial role in our Consumer Lending Department by assessing the creditworthiness of loan applicants and deciding whether to approve or deny a variety of loans under the loan authority. Their work is instrumental in maintaining BrightStar's risk tolerance. Operating within the established strategy and delegated authority, this position is key to generating a profitable portfolio. In addition, the Underwriter contributes to our business growth through cross-selling, offering an exciting opportunity to make a significant impact.
Job Responsibilities:
Risk evaluation:
- The Underwriter will evaluate submissions to determine the acceptability of risks according to the company guidelines and standards. They are responsible for determining proper collateral, pricing, limits, and terms based on exposure.
Guideline adherence:
- Recommend procedural and policy changes that may enhance productivity or ensure quality loan approvals and workflow. Understand and follow the applicable underwriting guidelines, policies, and procedures to consistently adhere to industry regulations. Operate within the assigned letter of underwriting authority.
Communication:
- Assistance with external communication. They interact with internal and external members to gather information and clarify underwriting requirements.
Data analysis:
- Utilize analytical tools within the system to evaluate exposure. Escalation of loans as necessary.
Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other underwriters and team members for analysis of more complex transactions, including small business loans. May participate in departmental projects and perform other duties as needed.
Documentation:
- Ensure adherence to company policy and make informed decisions on loan approvals and declines. Responsible for documenting the underwriting process and decisions of assigned policies.
Cross-selling and Revenue Generation:
- Participate in team meetings and marketing activities as needed and make recommendations to help with process efficiencies, highlight trends, etc. Drive departmental goals for production levels and service delivery. Approve loans within parameters approved by the Board of Directors. Recommend loan exceptions as needed.
Experience:
Three to five years of similar or related experience. Knowledge of underwriting to include, but not limited to, vehicles, personal loans, recreational vehicles, credit cards, and small business lending. Knowledge of MeridianLink Systems preferred.
Education:
(1) A two-year college degree, or (2) completion of a specialized certification or licensing, or (3) completion of specialized training courses conducted by vendors, or (4) job-specific skills acquired through an apprenticeship program.
Interpersonal Skills:
Work involves much personal contact with others inside and/or outside the organization for the purpose of first-level conflict resolution, building relationships, and soliciting cooperation. Discussions involve greater confidentiality and discretion, requiring diplomacy and tact in communication.
Compliance
Every employee must uphold the credit union's compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and anti-money laundering policies and procedures. Specific functions within B.S.C.U. will consider awareness of unusual or suspicious activity relevant to the department.
- In addition to any other assigned training courses, online B.S.A. and O.F.A.C. courses must be completed at least annually, as made available by the Training and Compliance Department.
- Maintains comprehensive knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act, Customer Identification Program, U.S.A. Patriot Act, O.F.A.C., Fair Lending, and Credit Card Act.
